THE MAIDSTONE &
MEDWAY CAT CLUB – SHOW MANAGERS' REPORT
It has been said that "lightning
never strikes twice" but last Saturday we
learned that snow obviously does! We knew we
just had to "go ahead" because the hall was
able to be penned, the hotel, hall and
catering booked and paid for, the rosettes
purchased etc. The dire financial implications
of cancellation were weighing heavily on our
shoulders. As the hall was able to be penned
and the show management team able to reach
Bracknell to organise the show, the only
viable and responsible decision was that the
show must go on!
We were so grateful to everyone
who worked extremely hard to ensure the day
was a success for everyone concerned despite
the conditions and problems encountered. Our
committee gave tremendous support, filling in
with various roles throughout the day
(multi-tasking was the name of the game!).
Poor Susan and Sarah Hope had a nightmare on
the Saturday when they suffered a puncture in
the dreadful conditions, but, because of their
advance planning and preparation, Vetting-in
was smooth and the Raffle ready for others on
the committee to take over. We are very
grateful to them for their spade work.
The judges were absolute
troupers! They took on extra classes without a
murmur so that all the Open Classes were
completed in record time. Those that could not
make it because of the weather were so
apologetic and wanted me to ensure the
exhibitors knew how sorry they were not to be
there. We had a similar situation with
stewards who were snowed in and unable to
fulfil their task, but there were volunteers
to fill-in and keep things running smoothly –
thank you all!
The table did a magnificent job,
coping with absolutely everything including
all the judge changes etc. We are so grateful
to everyone who worked for us in any capacity
– we even had exhibitors queuing to hand out
rosettes and prize cards! Vanessa Marriott was
a star! She was feeling far from well but
soldiered on and the table ran like clockwork.
It is impossible to list everyone
who helped, the Show Management Team were
rushed off their feet ensuring everything
proceeded smoothly, so cannot remember every
individual, but we thank you all most
sincerely, particularly those who "pitched in"
and gave such positive support and input to
the show even though they were not on the
committee, but were there and could see there
were jobs to be covered. As one exhibitor said
in her post show email, "It was an example of
the Cat Fancy at its best!"
It is hard to have faith in the
BBC Weather Report as it was still stating
"moderate snowfall for RG12 in the afternoon"
during the blizzard at 10.00am! However, we
have not received any complaints expressing
regret for coming to the show from an
exhibitor, judge, worker or visitor even if
their journey home was a nightmare. On the
contrary, we have received many emails and
telephone calls congratulating, supporting and
thanking us for an enjoyable day!
However, the thought of inclement
weather causing traffic chaos and disruption
yet again, with the possibility of
cancellation and financial ruin for the club
is a very serious concern for any Show
Manager; it is obviously a matter for the
committee to discuss and take to our members
so that a democratic decision can be made as
to the future of the Maidstone & Medway
Championship Show.
Meanwhile may we wish you a Very
Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy &
Successful 2011.
